Events & Things to Do - Take Action

(Formerly Contributing to Society)

Take Action to make the world a better place - one of Girl Scouts of the USA's three keys to leadership, is important to our council's mission and the Girl Scout movement.

New! TAKE ACTION!

“Help people at all times…be friendly and helpful…make the world a better place…Do a good turn daily.”

There are lots of ways to say it: in our Promise, Law, and Slogan; in our Mission; and in the three keys to leadership. But they all mean that Girl Scouts are committed to giving service and taking action to make the world a better place. It’s who we are! Check back here often to see if there are requests for service that meet the interests and abilities of the Girl Scouts you work with – and let us know how your adventures in helping other turn out by having the troop send a short article or report to ProgramResources@gsgatl.org.

Across Generations

SarahCare is an Adult Day Care Center in Snellville, Georgia (Gwinnett County) open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. We provide professional services in a secure and caring environment for older adults with health-related needs, including caregiver respite and support.

We like to incorporate intergenerational activities at least twice a month for our participants. Assistance is needed with various activities that take place during the day, including arts and crafts, bingo caller, outside activities, reading books, etc. If your Girl Scout troop or group would like to visit, interact with and entertain our participants, please contact Julie Wright by phone or e-mail: (770) 685-6971 ext. 319 or jwright@sarahcaresnellville.com.

Some Girl Scout program links you might want to explore include Brownie Girl Scouts Through the Years and Listening to the Past Try-Its;  the Across Generations badge; and the Generations Hand-In-Hand Interest Project, plus Try-Its, badges and IPs related to crafts/making things, nature discovery, putting on plays or performances, and heritage, citizenship and patriotism.

Good Samaritan Health Center Seeks Supplies

The Good Samaritan Health Center is a healthcare ministry to uninsured, low-income families in greater Atlanta. The Center offers medical, dental, health education, and mental health services to patients. Most importantly, The Center provides a comfortable environment for patients, where all people are treated with dignity and respect. You can learn more at www.goodsamatlanta.org. The clinic has needs for the following donated items to help their patients:

  • Family first aid kits
  • Personal Hygiene bags

If your troop would like to participate in a community service opportunity collecting items and putting together first aid kits or hygiene bags for patients, please contact Karen Rose, karen@goodsamatlanta.org, or (678)553-4905.

Other needs of the center include: Toiletry items and socks, Spanish and English Bibles, reading material for the waiting room (children's books and magazines), and baby products for new mothers.

Take Action! Steps:

Once your troop or group has a list of needed supplies, set aside time at a meeting for girls to talk about how and where they will collect or purchase what they need. (Use Volunteer Essentials 2010 as your guide.) Is there money left in the troop bank account from last year? Can they budget some of their Fall Product Sale profits for this project? Would family members or other troops in the service unit like to make “in kind” (materials, not money) contributions? Would their family doctor donate a box of bandages? Would a local drugstore give them a discount on toothbrushes and toothpaste? Could they organize a collection drive? This is a great opportunity for girls to discover their values (what’s important to them) and skills, connect with their communities, and take action to support a group that is trying to make the world a better place.

It’s Your Planet- Love It!

National Public Lands Day: Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010

Attention Girl Scouts of All Ages!

Plant a tree! Build a trail! Put up a bird box! Clean up trash! Collect native seeds! Pull up weeds!

Take a hike and identify plants. Test the water quality in a nearby stream. Learn about the wildlife living in your local park. And then teach your friends what you have learned.
There are so many ways to lend a hand to your favorite public land, whether it’s a stunning national park like the Grand Canyon, a beautiful beach like Cape Cod National Seashore, or your local forest preserve or schoolyard – and what a great way to kick off a It’s Your Planet – Love It! Leadership Journey.

Get outdoors and give something back to your community on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 25. National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. National Public Lands Day 2010 celebrates service and recreation on public lands while educating volunteers about the effects of climate change on our parks. The event also encourages volunteers to explore and enjoy America's natural wonders through outdoor recreation. After working hard, volunteers can take a hike, a swim, a bicycle ride and get healthy in America's backyard.

My name is Daniel Ramirez, and I am with the National Environmental Education Foundation. Annually, we put on National Public Lands Day, the nation's largest volunteer effort for the outdoors and public spaces. There are typically over 2000 sites that hold volunteer events. This year, it will be on September 25.  Just like the past year, we are holding a signature event at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site where we will be refurbishing and landscaping the historic houses in the area.

Volunteers will gather at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site Visitor Center at 450 Auburn Ave, Atlanta, GA at 8:30am for volunteer registration. Volunteer activities will begin at 9:00am and include various projects focused on restoring historic houses adjacent to Martin Luther King Jr’s first home. Other activities will include weeding, painting and mulching around the site.
